Tom Pitt lives in Barry with his partner and his two children. He grew up there and feels connected to the history and landscape of the place. His recent work is based on the coastline near to where he lives and he is particularly interested in Aberthaw – Most of his paintings are set there. He is inspired by the clash between humans and nature at Aberthaw, from the overt destruction of the groynes by the tide to the subtle and beautiful encroachment of moss and lichen on the seawall that runs the distance of the beach.
He paints on board as it allows him to scrape back paint to start again. This destructive process becomes a creative one as the marks left from scraping can be incorporated into the new paintings. The layers of paint build up to create a painting that shows not just a moment but a thought process considered and re-considered over time.
Tom had a solo show at Syson Gallery in 2017 and will be part of a two-person show at BayArt, Cardiff this Autumn.
